Tap

Ages 4 – Adult

Tap is a form of dance characterized by using the sounds of the tap shoes to create a form of percussion. Tap is a great way to develop musicality and coordination. Dancers learn about rhythm and how different rhythms accentuate a piece of music.

Benefits of Tap:

  • Enhances musicality to interpret a piece of music using musical phrasing and syncopation.
  • Develops balance and fine motor skills as dancers learn how to execute rhythmic patterns with their feet.
  • Engages muscles in the hips, calves, thighs, and core resulting in increased strength.
  • Improves cognitive functioning through memorization, pattern recognition, and recall as rhythms are mastered.

What to Wear:

Shoes: 

  • Pre and Level 1:  black tap shoes (Female dancers – easy strap velcro style; Male dancers – lace up style)
  • Level 2-Adult: black lace up style

**Split sole tap shoes are not permitted at any level.

Clothing: Female student dancers should wear convertible or stirrup style tights and a leotard. Dance shorts or jazz pants/leggings may be worn over tights. Male student dancers should wear jazz dance pants and a form fitted t-shirt or tank. Adult dancers should wear comfortable clothing that allows for movement. Baggy or loose-fitted clothing is not permitted.
