Hair & Makeup

TIP: It is easiest to manage hair that is slightly damp and has gel worked through it.

PONYTAIL: After applying gel and with hair damp, brush hair back and up gathering hair at the crown of the dancer’s head. Secure hair at the crown with a hair elastic that matches hair color as closely as possible. Use a fine tooth comb to smooth out any bumps or flyaways by starting at the front hairline and combing back towards the ponytail. Secure any loose ends with bobby pins. After all ends are secured, evenly spray a strong hold hairspray over the entire hairstyle.

BUN: Follow the same method above to secure hair into a ponytail. Begin twisting the ponytail and then wrap hair in a circle around the base of the ponytail securing with bobby pins as you wrap. Make sure to secure all loose ends. After bun and loose ends are secured, evenly spray a strong hold hairspray over the entire hairstyle.

HAIR ½ UP ½ DOWN: Working with damp hair use a comb to create a clean part from the front of the dancer’s ears to the crown of their head. Work gel through this section of hair only. Use a brush to smooth and secure hair with an elastic that matches hair color as closely as possible. After hair is smooth and loose ends are secured, spray only the hair that is pulled into a ponytail with a strong hold hairspray. Only use gel or hairspray on ½ down hair if necessary to tame flyaways.

Makeup can be applied at your discretion for dancers under age 8. Keep in mind stage lights are very bright. Because of this, dancers appear very washed out and pale. Facial features are lost and expression is hard to see. Below are our recommended products and method of application.

BASE: It is always best to begin with a primer to give makeup a smooth base, prevent streaking from perspiration, and to keep makeup lasting throughout the entire show. After the primer sets for 1-2 minutes, apply foundation. We recommend using a liquid, oil free foundation in a shade darker than your natural skintone. Blend foundation working from the center of the face towards the hairline making sure to blend under the jawbone and down onto the neck. After the foundation is dry, apply and blend concealer under the inside and outside corner of the eye, in between eyebrows, down the bridge of the nose, and the middle of the chin. Set base with a loose or pressed powder.
*Note: This base step is not necessary for younger dancers.*

BLUSH: Apply a rose/pink color blush along the top of the cheekbone starting at the outer edge and working inward to the apple of the cheek. Pick a color more dramatic than you would use for everyday wear. Recommended product: E.L.F. primer-infused matte blush-Always Crushing

EYESHADOW: Apply a very light highlight eyeshadow under the arch of the brow. Gently blend towards the outside and inside of the brow. Apply this same color to the inside corner of the eye. Then apply a medium brown eyeshadow from inner to outer corner of the eye. Apply the darkest brown eyeshadow only to the outer third of the eyelid then slowly blend inward. Be careful not to apply too much of the dark eyeshadow which can make eyes appear closed from stage.
Recommended product: NYX Ultimate-Warm Neutrals

EYELINER: Apply black eyeliner along the top and bottom lash line avoiding the water line. Connect the top and bottom lash lines at the outside corner of the eye in an upward point. A liquid eyeliner works best and lasts the longest. Recommended product: Kat Von D tattoo liner-Black

MASCARA: Apply multiple coats of black, lengthening mascara to top and bottom eyelashes. Recommended product: NYX Epic Ink Liquid Eyeliner-Black

*Note: the application of eyeliner or mascara may be too much for younger dancers to tolerate. Do your best to apply at least one of them.

LIPSTICK: Bright red lipstick is the only color that is appropriate for the stage. We recommend a lip stain to prevent having to reapply during the show and to prevent the transfer of color onto costumes. Recommended product: Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick-Ruby Red
